More about this model. Quick Summary Jaguar has expanded the reach of its F-Type sports car for 2016. It's fundamentally the same vehicle as the one that launched as. Jaguar F- Pace S First Edition Test – Review – Car and Driver. Instrumented Test. A decade or so ago, walking into the C/D offices and casually asking the staff how we felt about the emerging luxury- and/or performance- crossover segment would have elicited a collective sigh. For enthusiasts who grew up in an era when BMWs, Porsches, and—to the point here—Jaguars occupied rarefied space in the automotive landscape, the risk of tainting a storied bloodline by mixing with one- size- fits- most crossovers seemed a real possibility. Given consumers’ willingness to lay down premium cash for crossovers wearing premium labels, the arrival of the Jaguar F- Pace was inevitable. What’s remarkable is how Jaguar managed to leave more than a smattering of the brand’s essence intact. Our first impressions of the F- Pace were of a well- rounded vehicle—the Jaguar crossover displaying an impressive amalgam of comfort, styling, and interior space—for a surprisingly restrained base price of $4. V- 6. Selecting the F- Pace S First Edition achieves two objectives in one fell swoop: It bumps the 3. V- 6’s output by 4. F- Pace with essentially every luxury and performance option in the F- Pace arsenal. The hit parade starts with a set of 2. Pirelli P Zero tires, and it doesn’t let up from there. Mathematically inclined readers will note that that’s $1. First Edition F- Pace S model. But adding all of the items in the previous paragraph individually to a 3. S model would consume time better spent actually driving the F- Pace. One factor that tilts the price wheel in favor of the First Edition is its exclusivity: Jaguar says only 2. F- Pace S First Editions will be sold in the United States. The zero- to- 6. 0- mph romp consumed 5. BMW X3 x. Drive. 35i we tested and putting a 0. Mercedes- Benz GLC3. We expect the upcoming 2. Mercedes- AMG GLC4. The Porsche Macan, however, fries the bacon of all three crossovers, with our test of a 2. Macan GTS clocking the measure in 4. Quarter- mile times fit in a similar hierarchy, with the F- Pace S’s 1. BMW X3’s, while the GLC3. Macan GTS again leads with a speedy 1. The Jaguar’s V- 6, at least, sounds nearly as wonderful in the F- Pace as it does in the F- type sports car. And even the Porsche just barely bettered it with a 1. The Jaguar’s pedal action is still about as predictable as Gary Busey, but now we have proof that it’s actually doing the job well. Credit the Adaptive Dynamics package (called ADP), which includes electronically adjustable Bilstein dampers, fitted to all First Editions. Buyers of Prestige and R- Sport models can add the ADP for $1. In addition to the dampers, the ADP option allows the driver to select Dynamic or Normal modes individually for throttle mapping, the transmission shift strategy, and steering effort. These modes are entertaining to monkey with, but most of the time we just left everything in Dynamic mode. Only super- rough pavement or particularly sensitive passengers necessitated dulling the responses by switching to the Normal setting. Similarly, we usually let the eight- speed automatic call its own shifts rather than using the paddles. The prevailing handling characteristic was mild understeer, but the variable- rate electrically assisted power steering does little to telegraph any breaking news regarding the front tires’ contact patches. If we felt let down by one objective measurement, it was the mediocre 1. We’d hoped at least to hit the EPA city fuel- economy rating of 1. Getting the Porsche Macan GTS’s performance edge would ding the budget about $1. German starts at $6. GTS we tested stickered at more than $7. Porsche tells us the first batch of orders averaged $8. For those who won’t miss the F- Pace S model’s extra power, a base model with a V- 6 starts at less than $4. And the diesel model, the 2. With 3. 18 lb- ft of torque at 1. Well, that battle is over. Bloodied but somewhat unbowed, our sneers have been largely redirected toward the so- called “crossover coupe” segment. Jaguar F- Pace Review (2. That’s how the introductory line suggests Jaguar is entering the SUV arena, and the reasoning is sound enough: were Jaguar more confident it could sell an SUV, it would have tried it years ago. There are reasons why it hasn’t, of course. This is a company that – although written large on the radar of UK car buyers and enthusiasts – is a minnow alongside the German firms that its cars rival. Their products sell by the hundreds of thousands and contribute to sales of more than a million a year for each company. Jaguar sells fewer than 1. Or has, until now. Road tester. The F- Pace is the car that’s meant to change that. It’s a car that puts the future of Jaguar estates under threat but it’s also one that, frankly, no executive car maker can be without – even one that has a separate arm dealing entirely in executive SUVs. There’s an argument that this is one of the reasons for Jaguar’s SUV tardiness. Will a Jaguar 4x. Range Rover 4x. 4? It’s a possibility but, as the VW Group does with Volkswagen and Audi (and soon Skoda and Seat too), it’s a chance you take. And seemingly those at JLR have viewed the risk in the same vein, with Jaguar announcing the smaller E- Pace joining the range to take the fight to the BMW X1 and Audi Q3, while there is ongoing development to create an electric- powered version of the F- Pace - known as the i- Pace. At least you get the profit either way, rather than somebody else. And the F- Pace’s ethos is wilfully different, on paper and in the drives we’ve had so far, from anything else that rolls out of a Jaguar Land Rover facility. It’s a Jaguar, which means it’s a sporting SUV, we’re told – as much as one is possible. It’s a tall car with a modicum of off- road ability, but for those who like driving. That’s always a slight contradiction, but ever since BMW launched the X5 in the late 1. We’ve tried most F- Pace engine variants so far in one way or another, including the F- Pace S in both petrol and diesel variants, but the one tested here counts most: the 2. New Jaguar F- Pace SUV 2. The crossover market is growing faster than any other, with manufacturers offering niches within niches to satisfy buyers wanting something a little different. It’s a wonder, then, that it has taken Jaguar so long to make its first foray into this highly competitive sector. But the Jaguar F- Pace is finally here, so does it deliver? In terms of size, the Jaguar sits between the BMW X3 and X5, although engineers will freely admit that the Porsche Macan was a benchmark for the car’s dynamic ability. Jaguar also claims this new SUV can take on the larger Cayenne in terms of space and everyday practicality. It takes all that is great about the smaller XE and XF saloons and neatly repackages it as a beefed- up SUV. The steering is razor- sharp and perfectly weighted, while the ride is nicely judged. It’s neither overly firm nor too soft, meaning you can push on without upsetting the balance of the car. Grip on our all- wheel- drive model was impressive, but bigger undulations did show the F- Pace’s added weight – although you never suffer sudden jolts through the cabin. Body roll is well contained, too, offering just enough feedback to make the Jaguar great fun to drive on the right road without causing it to pitch and wallow through tighter bends. Take it off- road, and the ride isn’t as compromised as you’d think. Jag is leaving the proper rough stuff to sister company Land Rover, but the F- Pace isn’t scared of getting its boots muddy. You can feel the all- wheel- drive system slightly scrabbling for grip on loose or slippery ground, but it’s well controlled and gives you confidence off the beaten track. Accelerate hard and the four- cylinder diesel makes itself known, but in everyday driving, the 2. F- Pace’s more solid frame. It’s particularly composed at motorway speeds, where it settles nicely into a hushed and comfortable cruise. But it’s not the quickest car, and can’t compete with the Macan’s six- cylinder diesel engine. The entry- level F- Pace will dash from 0- 6. It won’t get your pulse racing, but select the right gear and there’s plenty of torque on tap for brisk progress. If you want a bit more get up and go, then Jaguar has you covered, too. The 3. 0- litre diesel V6 is a gem, and can accelerate from 0- 6. Macan S in a straight- line sprint. The petrol F- Pace is faster still, lifting the supercharged 3. V6 from the F- Type sports car. It brings a glorious soundtrack and does 0- 6. That’s about as fast as you’ll ever need to go, but it’s almost a certainty that JLR’s new Special Vehicle Operations division will come up with some ideas for the SUV, too. Company car drivers will be pleased to hear this entry- level F- Pace is available with both rear and four- wheel drive. The former will emit just 1. CO2 with a six- speed manual gearbox, cutting the 4. WD car’s emissions by 5g/km. Fuel economy for our all- wheel- drive auto stands at 5. The sweet- shifting eight- speed ZF auto is a perfect companion to each and every engine, too, changing ratios cleanly and smoothly. You can switch into Sport mode for faster shifts, which helps when you’re in the mood for more spirited driving. Drivers can also toggle through the Normal, Eco and Dynamic settings, as well as an all- weather mode for more slippery conditions. UK buyers opting for the 2. All come well equipped, with even the basic Prestige getting 1. Jag’s In. Control sat- nav. Step up to the R- Sport, and you’ll benefit from bigger wheels, xenons, a more aggressive bodykit and gloss black details. As with most Jaguars, a plush Portfolio model is also available, adding the full- length panoramic roof, rear view camera and a 3. W Meridian stereo. You can spec the more powerful diesel and petrol in range- topping S trim, which come with sportier finishes inside and out, plus subtle badging. In the cabin, the F- Pace will feel very familiar to current XF and XJ owners, with a simple yet effective dash set- up, covered top- to- toe in luxurious leathers, metals and wood veneer. You’ll have to look hard for any sign of scratchy plastics, and the sumptuous leather seats are supportive and comfortable. The optional 1. 0. JLR’s previous touchscreen efforts, and features the pinch- to- zoom functionality which makes it intuitive to use. Handy touches like the Wi- Fi hotspot add an extra layer of connectivity, although there’s no Apple Car. Play or Android Auto, which puts Jaguar behind the times. Still, the brand’s new wearable Activity Key will be a hit for those who play a lot of sport. The idea is you can secure your valuables – and key – inside the car, then use the wearable waterproof Active Key to lock and unlock it. On the subject of practicality, Jaguar has done an excellent job of keeping the C- X1. F- Pace without sacrificing the SUV’s versatility. The 6. 50- litre boot is a considerable 1. X3’s, while the F- Pace offers almost as much load space overall as cars in the class above with the 4. A total load area of 1,7. Cayenne. The optional panoramic roof compromises rear headroom slightly, but taller adults will have no complaints on longer journeys. Jaguar claims best- in- class knee room, too, and we see no reason to argue. There’s considerably more space than you get in a Macan, and it’s not far short of large SUV rivals like the Mercedes GLE. There’s plenty of room to stretch out, while the large glasshouse offers a light, spacious view of the surroundings.
